Building Social Identities

Socializing our interests and goals is important for our identity. Sharing with others is something that will move us towards kindness but also, it is important for our own sense of identity. When we share positive aspects of our own, we are motivated to take care of ourselves, even to try to find out what we are ourselves and what are the issues we care about: how do we want to help the world?

We feel interested and attracted to things that catch our attention in social media because it resonates with some aspect of our own. Openness and acceptance are part of the process, but also defining our self, finding our true self. When we catch up with someone who is on our frequency, no only it feels validating. It is almost as if our imaginary friends suddenly martialize, someone else has met them too! Participating is a powerful way to make real your otherwise abstract or fuzzy projects and ideas because identity is the interface between our inner reality and the social world.
